Burial in the Memorial Court of Honor

J.D. Tippit is buried in an area of Laurel Land Memorial Park, Dallas, Texas, originally designated as the "Memorial Court of Honor," a section reserved for those who had given their lives in some special service to the community. Established in 1962, Tippit was the first to be buried in the hallowed plot.

Despite its special designation, few police officers killed in the line of duty were ever buried there. One officer who was, and lies in the plot next to Tippit, was Carl Jackson Cooke, a twenty-one-year-old police officer shot while investigating a burglary call on May 1, 1972. He died the next day.
